What is Bluetooth?
Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks (PANs). Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices such as mobile phones, laptops, personal computers, printers, GPS receivers, digital cameras, and video game consoles over a secure, globally unlicensed short-range radio frequency. The Bluetooth specifications are developed and licensed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group.

Bluetooth Specification

The Bluetooth specification was developed in 1994 by Jaap Haartsen and Sven Mattisson, who were working for Ericsson Mobile Platforms in Lund, Sweden. The specification is based on frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology.

The specifications were formalized by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), organised by Mohd Syarifuddin. The SIG was formally announced on May 20, 1998. Today it has a membership over 7000 companies worldwide. It was established by Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Toshiba, and Nokia, and later joined by many other companies.

Bluetooth Organization

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) is a privately held, not-for-profit trade association. The Special Interest Group was founded in September 1998. The Bluetooth SIG itself does not make, manufacture, or sell Bluetooth enabled products. The SIG has more than 9,000 member companies that are leaders in the telecommunications, computing, automotive, music, apparel, industrial automation, and network industries. SIG members drive development of Bluetooth wireless technology, and implement and market the technology in their products. The SIG has a small group of dedicated staff in Hong Kong, Sweden, and the USA.

Bluetooth Dongle

A bluetooth dongle is a small add-on that you can plug into a USB port; which will then allow you to send and receive files via bluetooth from you PC to a bluetooth enabled device (in our case, a mobile phone). Alternatively, in more modern computers you may already have such a device installed.

Bluetooth Rearview Mirror

A bluetooth rearview mirror is a rearview mirror having bluetooth function. When a call comes in, the rearview mirror displays caller information in the middle of the mirror’s face.

Question by hi: bluetooth dongle?
i have asked a question before regarding a bluetooth dongle. im wondering if i need a program to put mp3s onto my phone which is a v3c razr. some people have said that itunes songs will work and some just say a normal mp3. what do they mean by just an mp3. from where? how do i do this? i see there is a program u can get for 40 dollars but im wondering if there is a differnt way out. thanks alot!

Be aware though, the V3C RAZR only has 30MB of internal memory which is roughly enough to store *seven* mp3s. And that memory is also used for your phone book, any pictures you take etc, so in real terms it’s actually even less than that. If you wanted a phone that would also work as an mp3 player then you’ve bought entirely the wrong model basically.

A Bluetooth is a single digital wireless protocol that utilizes the short-ranged communications technology. It facilitates both voice and data transmissions over a short distance, usually from a mobile device. In turn, it creates a personal area network (Pans). The intent behind the Bluetooth development is to provide a way in order to connect and exchange information between many devices. Moreover, the Bluetooth SIG, is currently releasing newer versions, along with several upgrades and backward compatibility. Bluetooth 1.2 is the most recent release. It includes the addition of an anonymity mode, which then masks the hardware address of the device in order to protect it from identity snooping and tracking. It also cuts the interference by avoiding crowded frequencies of adaptive frequency hopping.

Bluetooth headsets offer a convenient and user-friendly wireless connection. This is with the use of a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone. With its 30 feet range (10 meters) capacity, cell phones can talk with other headsets using this technology. Aside from this, PCs can talk to keyboards or printers as well. Thus, talking with each other, without the need for wires can make up about seven connections at a single time. This is even with a speed of 1 Mbps.

Furthermore, Bluetooth headsets have an array of different styles to choose from. A model with a boom or without boom might be the best type that can fit your needs. A boom is a traditional headset equipped with a microphone. It arches towards your mouth. Headsets with boom are as follows:

This headset is a winner. Like a cyborg, Jabra FreeSpeak BT250 is comfortable, along with its high volume and clarity capability. It will make you think that you’re not even using it. With its innovative design, it is more like a science fiction movie prop. You can also get this quality headset for the price of .95. Thus, the headset weighs only 0.8 ounce and it is compatible with Bluetooth 1.1. Jabra also gives a total of 8 hours talk time and up to 10 days of actual standby time. Lastly, it includes a travel charger. This is two pieces, making it a bit bulky.

Jabra GN-6210 Office Wireless Headset

The headset itself is identical to the crescent shaped of Jabra BT250. It employs a wraparound design and a short boom mike which holds the battery and control buttons. The GN 6210 can be used simultaneously with a Bluetooth mobile or a landline phone. This is by simply plugging it into the charging cradle. The price for this baby would range from 5.62 up to 3. It has along battery life, but it has problems with call quality. Thus, the GN 6210 has a talk-time battery life of about 8 hours and a standby time of about 7 days.

Logitech Mobile Bluetooth headset

I have some ringtones saved to my computer, but I do not have a usb slot on my phone. How do I send the tones to my phone through bluetooth? I have a Motorola V300 but don’t think it is bluetooth enabled. Will a bluetooth dongle take care of this?

This problem can occur due to many reasons such as due to incorrect settings of Bluetooth, corrupted drivers, faulty Bluetooth module in the laptop, etc.

Resolution:

Perform the below steps to resolve the issue.

1. Ensure that Bluetooth is enabled on notebook and bluetooth devices.

Notebooks have a wireless switch and you may have to switch it on for the Bluetooth to function in your system and make sure that the Bluetooth is enabled in the notebook, to enable it, right click on Bluetooth icon in desktop and select Enable. If the icon is not available in taskbar and you can find the icon over there. If you don’t find any Bluetooth icon even in Control Panel, then Bluetooth might be running from some another application, like HP has HP wireless Assistant where the settings of both wireless connection and Bluetooth are configured and you can turn on Bluetooth from this. Check if Bluetooth is running from such application. You can also find the Bluetooth connection from Network Connections.

After enabling the Bluetooth check if it is enabled even in Device Manager.

If it is not enabled in Device Manager, then enable it. To enable Bluetooth from Device manager, click on start and select Run. Type devmgmt.msc and click on OK to open Device Manager.

Click on “+” sign next to Bluetooth Devices and enable it by right clicking on the Bluetooth module or device. If Bluetooth is already, you might notice that the Bluetooth icon would be blue in color and appears in red when it is disabled.

2. After enabling Bluetooth in both devices, make sure that these devices are in discoverable mode and if the devices are not discoverable, then connect your Bluetooth device to any other Bluetooth device other than laptop with which you are experiencing the problem and check if the device works fine with other Bluetooth device. If the Bluetooth device that you are trying to connect to the laptop does not work even with other Bluetooth devices then the problem might be with the Bluetooth device and not the laptop.

If there are no issues with the Bluetooth device then check with the Bluetooth software in laptop as we may experience the issue even if the software is corrupted. Check the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling the software. Just check now if you are able to connect to the Bluetooth device without any problem.

If the issue persists, then perform System Restore in the notebook and restore the notebook to an earlier time when the notebook was working fine and had no issues. Check if the issue is resolved now, if not you may try removing and reseating the Bluetooth module if possible as this can be done only in some laptop models.

To remove and reseat the Bluetooth module you can follow the steps in the service manuals of your laptop that are available in your notebook support website. If this cannot be done in your laptop, please contact your notebook support once since the issue might be with the Bluetooth module which does not work or fails to make network connection with the other device.

If the devices are discoverable, then pair the devices.

3. We will have to enter the pass key for Bluetooth device and use the same key in the computer to pair each of these devices. If you are unable to pair them, be sure that the you are using the same pass key on both notebook and Bluetooth device and also ensure that the pass key you are using is the right one.

Now after the devices are paired up try to send a file between from the device to the notebook.

If this does not work, move the devices closer (within 1-5 meter range).

Please do not make many connections with Bluetooth device while you are connecting or transferring a file to the notebook as the bandwidth of Bluetooth has a limit and might fail to support multiple connections at the same time and also disconnect your Bluetooth headset while connecting.

Check for the issue now, if not resolved then try with a new connection by canceling the previous connection. If the issue is still not resolved, proceed with the below steps. The issue could be even due to the corrupted drivers, therefore reinstall the Bluetooth drivers.

4. Reinstall the Bluetooth drivers

Go to Device Manager and click on “+” sign next to Bluetooth Devices. Select Bluetooth module and right click on it and click on Uninstall to uninstall the drivers. You can reinstall the drivers from the website of your notebook support and check if Bluetooth works. If this does not resolve the issue, try by reinstalling even the other Bluetooth module that might be present in Bluetooth Devices in Device Manager.

Some notebook manufacturers provide diagnostic tools that are used to test this kind of issues and give the result as pass or fail. Dell has this diagnostic test for certain models for testing the Bluetooth functionality of dell laptop. You can check for this diagnostics for Bluetooth in notebook from your laptop support website.

If the issue still persists, perform System Recovery which may fix the issue.

Before performing System Recovery, take the backup of your hard disk as your notebook will be restored to factory settings.

If the recovery process does not resolve the issue, then the problem might be related to hardware and to resolve this issue, you have to contact your notebook support.
